Watching some of the C-Span hearing today on runaway costs in the healthcare industry. To bring down costs the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries are going to need more oversight. Free market capitalism is preferred in most industries but sick people are often in no condition to shop for best prices and services, this is why this industry will have to have more than usual oversight if America is ever to bring healthcare costs to a reasonable level. Along with that we need a nationwide effort,  in schools and adults, for education on healthy lifestyle choices, this will also greatly bring down healthcare costs. A single payer system is also necessary if this nation is to ever get a handle on healthcare costs. There are many options for funding this and then the industry can openly compete for this pot of money, but to do this pricing must become much more transparent.

Global utopia possible? I think so

A mostly stress free, peaceful and prosperous world is possible I believe, due to all the advances in technology, engineering, medicine and so forth in recent decades. If we/humanity can stop wasting so much time and money on weapons, conflicts and so on, and all begin pulling in the same direction, like a colony of ants for example, or a hive of bees, we/humanity currently have the capacity for healthcare for all, nutrition for all, adequate housing for all, and so on. It can be done, simply requires intelligent choices from world leaders and society in general.

Do you meditate?

I've been reading about this off and on for a while now and I'm now convinced that probably every single person on this planet would be happier, calmer, more peaceful, less angry, less violent and increase their intellectual abilities by incorporating some form and some degree of mediation into their lives.

It's getting positive results in this school in a tough inner city neighborhood, I think it's probably time for this country, and globally, to consider implementing this in all schools, perhaps also prisons and workplaces. Some might consider those last two examples to be repetitive : ) my apologies for digressing, I do believe this is very important and if more widely implemented and practiced can significantly change the world for the better.

Can we ever eliminate all weapons?

Interesting segment by Frontline on Libya, near total devastation. Just a century ago the weapons we now have were mostly unimaginable. More than likely by the end of this century the weapons that will be available or potentially available, at this time are completely unimaginable.

I continue to believe the only opportunity for the long term survival of humans, or at least avoiding a catastrophic event where perhaps a few thousand out of billions would survive, is global agreement for a complete elimination of any and all weapons and strict laws barring research and manufacturing of weapons.

All species fight for resources, even small ants will fight to the death for territory... but surely, we are more intelligent than ants?

Just a random thought today, we/society, really need to do more to eliminate or at least greatly reduce drug abuse and addiction. I enjoy urban hiking but much of the time I don't actually feel safe and most urban, and rural crime, is directly related to drug abuse.

I believe there are solutions that can be more effective than what we've been doing the past few decades, will get into that more another day.

Cameras in the Court?

I think it's way past time for cameras to be in the Supreme Court. The people paid for the building, the people pay the utilities for the building, the toilet paper in the restrooms, of course the salaries for the judges. Why shouldn't the people be allowed to see what their money is being spent on? It can be done with rules and decorum and dignity for the judges that they deserve. Only a limited number of cameras, no extreme closeups. The Supreme Court matters, let's do this America...

Taxes: Federal, state, capital gains, consumption

Some thoughts today on updating tax rates and codes in America.

Five federal taxes rates,
  • 0 to $15k pay 0%
  • $15k to 45k pay 10%
  • $45k to 90k pay 20%
  • $90k to 250k pay 30%
  • $250k and over pay 40%
Social security taxes would be eliminated as this is unfair to lower and middle class earners as high wage earners now only pay social security taxes on a small portion of their income. An additional 3% could be added to the above rates if needed in helping fund a national pension system to replace social security.

Capital gain rates the same as earned income minus 10%
  • 0 to $15k pay 0%
  • $15k to 45k pay 0%
  • $45k to 90k pay 10%
  • $90k to 250k pay 20%
  • $250k and over pay 30%

A national sales or consumption tax is probably needed. Perhaps 5% to help fund a national health care fund or the national health care fund could receive funds from taxes on unhealthy products such as sugary drinks, junk food, alcohol, tobacco and so on. I believe the only way to get a handle on national health care increases is a single payer system which is much more efficient in a number of ways and even more importantly an emphasis and more education at all ages on how to eat properly and live a healthy lifestyle.

(state rates coming soon)

The Growth of Autism Diagnoses. What's the Solution?

I just saw the video below from the National Autistic Society

Too much information, yes I think that can be a challenge for many considering humans have basically in the past century or so removed ourselves from nature and a more natural environment that we just spent the last several million years evolving from. I'd like to see a research pilot program of maybe 50 to 100 kids, placed more directly in nature, growing a garden, studying nature, healthy diet, adequate exercise, stress management and see the results at the end of maybe 6 months, a year, two years, five years

Globalization

GLOBAL HEALTH FUND: This is many decades, possibly even a century or two in the future but I believe a global health fund is the best solution for the healthcare of the human species.

GLOBAL SYSTEM OF TAXATION: This will prevent the vast majority of off shore tax havens or more accurately tax scams.

GLOBAL BANKING SYSTEM AND RULES: This will prevent the vast majority of so called "off shore" banking schemes.
